The University of Alabama System Office of Government Relations & Economic/Workforce Development works with legislative and executive branch officials at the state and federal levels of government to enhance the quality of education and health care in Alabama and beyond. In addition, the Office coordinates with state and local leaders in the public and private sectors to ensure that the UA System continues to play an integral role in the development of the state’s workforce.
The UA System Office of Government Relations & Economic/Workforce Development serves as the liaison between The University of Alabama Board of Trustees and the legislative and executive branches of state and federal government through its representation of the University of Alabama, UAB, UAH, and the UAB Health System. Under Board Rules, all governmental affairs activities of the 3 campuses and the UAB Health System are to be coordinated through this Office.
Vice Chancellor for Governmental Affairs and Economic/Workforce Development
Clay Ryan serves as Vice Chancellor for Governmental Affairs and Economic/Workforce Development for The University of Alabama System. He is responsible for federal, state, and local governmental affairs activities for UA, UAH, UAB, and the UAB Health System and coordinates all economic and workforce development activities Systemwide. Clay previously chaired the Governmental and Regulatory Affairs practice group at Maynard, Cooper & Gale, one of the Southeast’s leading law firms.
Clay received his J.D. with honors from The University of Alabama School of Law and holds a B.A. degree with honors from Birmingham-Southern College. He is a graduate of Leadership Birmingham and has been recognized by the Birmingham Business Journal’s “Top 40 Under 40” and Yellowhammer News’ “Power & Influence 50.” He has served as a board member of the Alabama Sports Council, Glenwood Autism & Behavioral Health Center, and as chair of the Public Affairs Research Council of Alabama’s Roundtable. He is a member of the 2019-2020 Class of Leadership Alabama.
Assistant Vice Chancellor for Governmental Affairs and Economic/Workforce Development
Christopher Porter Banister, Jr. is a native of Anniston, Alabama where he graduated from The Donoho School. Porter spent his college years in Virginia at Hampden-Sydney College. There he was active in many campus activities including serving in the Student Senate before being elected President of the Student Government.
After graduating with a degree in Political Science, Porter moved to Montgomery, Alabama where he held positions in both the Legislative and Executive branches of State Government. He later worked as Director of Governmental Affairs for the Business Council of Alabama.
He now serves as the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Governmental Affairs and Workforce/Economic Development for The University of Alabama System.
He is a member of numerous professional and social clubs and is married to the former Virginia Bear of Montgomery.
Director of Governmental Affairs and Economic/Workforce Development
Charlie Taylor is the Director of Governmental Affairs and Economic/Workforce Development for The University of Alabama System. In this role, Charlie serves as the liaison between the The University of Alabama, UAB, UAH, and the UAB Health System and the legislative and executive branches of government at the local, state, and federal levels.
Charlie received his B.A. from the University of Alabama and his J.D. from the University of Alabama School of Law. While in law school, Charlie clerked for Fine Geddie & Associates in Montgomery, Protective Life Corporation in Birmingham, and Jones Walker LLP in Washington, D.C. He is a member of the Leadership Tuscaloosa Class of 2019 and has been recognized by Yellowhammer News’ “Power and Influence: Who’s Next.”
