Clay Ryan

Vice Chancellor for Government Relations and Economic and Workforce Development


Clay Ryan serves as Vice Chancellor for Governmental Relations and Special Counsel for The University of Alabama System, where he coordinates federal, state, and local governmental affairs for the The University of Alabama, UAH, UAB, and the UAB Health System. Prior to joining the System, Clay chaired the Governmental and Regulatory Affairs practice group at Maynard, Cooper & Gale, one of the Southeast’s leading law firms.

Clay received his J.D. with honors from The University of Alabama Law School of Law and holds a B.A. degree, also with honors, from Birmingham-Southern College. He is a graduate of Leadership Birmingham and has been recognized by the Birmingham Business Journal’s “Top 40 Under 40” and Yellowhammer News’ “Power & Influence 50.” He has served as a board member of Glenwood Autism & Behavioral Health Center and as chair of the Public Affairs Research Council of Alabama’s Roundtable.

Clay is the proud father of his incomparable daughter, Abigail, who has five national championships to her credit in her 11 years on earth and innumerable broken hearts on the way in the next few years.
