Chief University Counsel, UAH
John Cates served as University Counsel in the Office of Counsel from 1984 to 1988. He rejoined the Office of Counsel as University Counsel in 2004 and was promoted to Chief University Counsel in 2016. As Chief University Counsel, John focuses on a wide variety of legal issues affecting academia, including litigation, research, technology transfer and intellectual property. In addition, he has taught classes in the UAH College of Business Administration.
John earned his B.A. from The University of Alabama and his J.D. from The University of Alabama School of Law. He is a member of the Alabama State Bar and the National Association of College and University Attorneys.
