General Counsel / Secretary of The Board of Trustees
Sid J. Trant is General Counsel and Secretary of The Board of Trustees of The University of Alabama System.
As General Counsel, Sid represents The Board of Trustees and its institution in all legal matters and is responsible for the delivery of all legal services for the System, its three campuses and affiliated entities, including the retention and management of outside counsel. To fulfill these responsibilities, the General Counsel staffs, organizes, and manages the Office of Counsel of The University of Alabama System, which is comprised of attorneys and support staff strategically located throughout the System.
Serving as the Board Secretary, Sid is the primary liaison to members of The Board of Trustees and facilitates all communication with the Board and System leadership to enhance Board governance. The Board Secretary staffs, organizes, and manages the Board Office, which includes all aspects of each Board meeting, and the preparation and retention of official documents.
Prior to joining the System Office in September 2017, Sid was a partner at Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP. Serving the firm for more than 30 years, Sid was responsible for providing transactional, regulatory, and litigation advice for businesses in the areas of environmental, energy, and natural resources.
Sid earned his B.A. from The University of Alabama (summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa) and his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center (magna cum laude, Order of the Coif). He is a member of the Alabama State Bar, American Bar Association, Association of Corporate Counsel, Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges, National Association of College and University Attorneys, and the Birmingham and Tuscaloosa County Bar Associations.
