Joseph Espy III

2nd Congressional District

Joe Espy, graduated from The University of Alabama in 1969 earning a Bachelor’s
Degree through the School of Commerce and Business Administration and, again, in
1972 with his Juris Doctorate from The University of Alabama School of Law. As an
undergraduate, he was a member of Jasons and Omicron Delta Kappa and also served as
SGA President. In November of 2000, Joe was elected to the Board of Trustees of the
University of Alabama System and served three terms as President Pro Tempore of the
Board of Trustees.

Joe was admitted to the Alabama State Bar in 1972 and is a successful attorney in
Montgomery as a principal in the firm of Melton, Espy and Williams, P.C. Previously,
he was a former deputy District Attorney for Montgomery County, Alabama and a
federal law clerk.

Joe is a Fellow and Member of the American College of Trial Lawyers, International
Society of Barristers, International Academy of Trial Lawyers, American Board of Trial
Advocates, and the Alabama Law Foundation (invitation-only organizations with the
most rigorous standards). In two of these organizations, there are only 500 lawyers
selected from the entire United States. Joe is also a member of the American Bar
Association, Alabama State Bar, and Montgomery County Bar Association.

Joe was the first recipient of the Montgomery Bar Association’s “Award for Service and
Achievement”. He is listed in the publications “The Best Lawyers in America” and
“Super Lawyers”. He has been recognized as one of the 50 most powerful and influential
people in Alabama. In 2019, Joe was presented the Living Legend Award by the Iota
Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa. Joe has been extremely involved in civic and
community activities in Montgomery, especially youth organizations.
