"The UA System Health & Safety Advisory Committee has helped guide data-driven decisions to promote campus safety and allow for multiple successful academic terms since the beginning of the pandemic – including the semesters that began during a surge," said Selwyn M. Vickers, MD, dean of the UAB Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine and CEO of the UAB Health System and UAB/Ascension St. Vincent's Alliance. "Our campuses have much higher vaccination rates than the community at large, and we continue to encourage anyone who hasn't been fully vaccinated and boosted to take advantage of widely available, safe and effective vaccines that overwhelmingly protect from the worst outcomes of the virus."

Based on national and statewide trends, the UA System Health & Safety Advisory Committee expected an increase in case numbers. Although omicron is highly contagious, it generally causes less severe illness compared to other variants — especially among people who take advantage of the COVID vaccines.

We know in-person learning and an on-campus experience improve student success, so it remains important that we maintain those opportunities while following safety measures that have proven to be effective in reducing COVID transmission. The UA System Health & Safety Advisory Committee, including public health, infectious disease, and education experts, continues to monitor changes in viral variants, transmission rates and hospitalizations, and will recommend adjusted health and safety strategies as needed.
