Dr. Tonjanita Johnson serves as Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs for The University of Alabama System, where she provides executive leadership for academic affairs, student success, and institutional research and effectiveness, across the System’s three doctoral research universities: The University of Alabama, The University of Alabama at Birmingham, and The University of Alabama in Huntsville. She also advises the Chancellor on academic and student affairs policy and leads systemwide efforts related to academic program planning, implementation, review, and continuous improvement. Dr. Johnson also holds a graduate faculty appointment in The University of Alabama College of Education and serves as the System’s primary liaison to the Alabama Commission on Higher Education and other state, regional, and national educational organizations.

In recognition of her distinguished contributions to higher education leadership and advancement, Dr. Johnson was named a CASE Laureate by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) in 2024. She is widely recognized for her expertise in higher education administration, organizational effectiveness, strategic planning, student success, communications, and institutional transformation.

Prior to joining the UA System leadership team, Dr. Johnson served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for the University of Tennessee System, where she provided executive oversight for a broad portfolio of systemwide functions, including Academic Affairs and Student Success, Institutional Research, Human Resources, Facilities Planning and Capital Projects, Communications and Marketing, Enterprise Risk Management, and Strategic Planning. Across more than two decades of cabinet-level leadership, she has also held senior administrative and faculty appointments at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, Middle Tennessee State University, and Mississippi Valley State University.

A proud alumna of The University of Alabama, Dr. Johnson began her collegiate journey as a New York Times Scholar. She earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mass communication from UA and a Ph.D. in Urban Higher Education from Jackson State University, where she was an Ayers Fellow in the Jake Ayers Institute for Urban Research. She is a Six Sigma Master Black Belt, completed the Institute for Educational Management at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and earned a post-baccalaureate certificate in Construction Management from Louisiana State University.

An active civic and professional leader, Dr. Johnson serves on the Leadership Alabama Board of Directors (Class XXXII) and the Alabama Productivity Center Advisory Board and has been a charter member of The University of Alabama Library Leadership Board for more than 25 years. She is a former member of the international Board of Trustees of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education and the CASE Commission for Communications and Marketing. A frequent speaker and facilitator, she has contributed extensively to discussions on higher education leadership, student success, institutional strategy, and organizational excellence.

A native of Butler, Alabama, Dr. Johnson resides in Tuscaloosa with her husband, Dr. Tony Johnson. They are the parents of an adult daughter, T’Anna Gabrielle Johnson, an emerging cinematographer based in Chicago.
