The Capitol Scholars Program is an immersive summer internship program in Washington, D.C., for exceptional University of Alabama System students who plan to pursue a career opportunity in or around the government. This curated experience is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of government, introducing them to various positions in the field and expanding their view of governmental affairs.

Capitol Scholars will participate in intensive internships and experiential learning opportunities with offices throughout D.C., such as members of the Alabama congressional delegation, congressional committee offices and governmental affairs agencies. While in D.C., Capitol Scholars will develop leadership skills, learn the art of policy research, analysis and advocacy, as well as be exposed to high-impact professional experiences such as networking opportunities with policy experts, governmental officials, and UA System alumni.

Purpose

The program’s purpose is two-fold:

  1. To provide an immersive summer internship program in Washington, D.C., designed to provide exceptional UA System students interested in careers in and around government with life changing, merit-based opportunities by allowing them to access roles in our nation’s capital.
  2. To develop a network of intelligent, diligent, civic-minded UA System alumni who are passionate about serving the state of Alabama.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Who is eligible to apply?

    UA, UAB, and UAH students who are:

    • Enrolled in an undergraduate degree program and have earned at least 60 credit hours OR enrolled in a graduate or professional degree program,
    • Graduating in Spring 2026 or later,
    • Interested in working in and around government, and
    • Available to intern in Washington, D.C., in Summer 2026 (mid-May to June).

    Students will be evaluated on merit, including academic excellence, leadership, and commitment to national, state, and local community service.

  • How do I submit recommendations?

    All recommendations are to be submitted digitally. Applicants should share a link to the recommendation form above with the individual writing their recommendation.

  • What can I expect after applying?

    Students will be notified if they are selected to interview, which will take place at each campus the week of September 29, 2025.

  • What are the dates of the program?

    The Capitol Scholars Program is a seven-week program that runs from approximately mid-May through the end of June. Specific dates will be provided to selected students in spring 2026.

  • Is financial support available for the summer?

    Capitol Scholars will be provided housing for the duration of the program as well as a stipend to defray additional cost-of-living expenses.

  • Is there course credit for the program?

    Capitol Scholars receive transcript recognition and credentials at all three universities within the UA System by registering for OCS001 – Capitol Scholars Internship Experience. Capitol Scholars are expected to fulfill the full term of their internship placement and experiential learning opportunities and maintain active, professional engagement throughout. Weekly check-ins, assigned readings, and reflection submissions are required components of this experience.
