The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees elected Scott Phelps of Tuscaloosa as its new President pro tempore during its annual meeting in Tuscaloosa on September 1. Phelps has represented Alabama’s 4th Congressional District on the Board of Trustees since 2015. Prior to his election as President pro tem, he served as Chair of both the Finance and Legal Affairs Committees.
Phelps began his career in Birmingham as an attorney at Bradley Arant Rose & White. He then returned to his hometown of Tuscaloosa in 1995, joining Greene Group Inc., where he currently serves as Vice President and Secretary. In 2005, he played an instrumental role in establishing Bryant Bank and has been an active member of its Board since its inception. Phelps holds a bachelor’s degree from Birmingham-Southern College and a J.D. degree from The University of Alabama School of Law.
Trustee Stan Starnes, outgoing President pro tem completing three years of service in the role, observed: “We on the Board are very fortunate that Scott Phelps is available and willing to serve our state in this critical capacity. He is a person of uncommon intellect and unparalleled devotion to the University of Alabama System. He will serve us with distinction.”
